    • The machines are possibly still on 1809. It doesn’t have Pause.

I agree, which is why I asked for winver, won’t be a doubt then.  I was going on the assumption he had 1909 installed as he said in his OP.  🙂

I updated my desktop to ver. 1909

Ahh, I see the error of my ways. Desktop and Laptops

    • Bluetrix, I do not see “Pause” directly under “Check for Updates”.

      Ron,
You must have an early version of Windows 1909, in which the Pause feature was not included.

Type winver in the search box on your desktop. It should show you the following with version and build.

      winver

Also, as @zig said, click on advanced options. At the bottom of that page a toggle on/off for pause may be there, turn it on if you want to pause updates.

    • Deferral and Hide Feature Update are Windows Pro settings, that’s why PK asked what version you were using. Pause is directly under Check For Updates. Each click=7 days, 35 days Max. (5 clicks)

Metered connections are not on to my knowledge. How do I check?

Click on UP arrow in bottom right of System Tray (show hidden Icons), then click on Network and then Network again. That will open settings. Click on Network at top. Metered ON/OFF is at bottom of list.

I am not sure what you mean by “a third-party update blocker” – examples?

Here are four examples of a blocker.

Provided you don’t have Windows 20h1 that was released in Feb 2020 as an ISO, you can try the following.  CREATE A RESTORE POINT FIRST!

Open command prompt with elevated privileges (Admin)

      Type this: net stop wuauserv

If that shows successful type or copy n paste this

      del  “%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log”

That command will clear update cache.

      Start wuauserv again

      net start wuauserv

      Post back results or problems.

      hth

Edit to add: A newer date (March 2020) creating a batch file to do this automatically (no typing, just click run as Admin)

The only problem I have is with a new Dell laptop that has the Optane memory SSD. It can’t figure out how to back it up even with the Optane function turned off.

      Welcome to AskWoody Groundhog45.

Fred Langa did a two part series back in June 2019 on Optane’s inner workings.  Part 1 and Part 2, he wasn’t overly enthused at the weighed results.

I found this post by JBurn12 from 4 months ago in the Intel forum, hope it helps.

I hope this helps some poor souls like me dealing with Hdd + Optane Memory pc’s, Macrium Reflect 7.2 is working for me, making backup, restore and rescue media, all which perform perfectly, without disabling Optane. They seem to be the only backup program dealing with this problem so far.

    • in reply to: Free tax prep? #2188808

In an article by Geoffrey A. Fowler, Technology columnist on March 7, 2019, he reminds us what Susan has said here on AskWoody.

I know it’s hard to argue with free. But for too long, we’ve been letting free technology blind us to a really important question: How is somebody going to make money from this? In Silicon Valley, an adage goes, “If the product is free, that means you’re the product.”

The first sentence of his article made me want to read all of it.

Nothing is certain except death, taxes … and tech companies making grabs for your data.

He notes there are tax prep companies that offer free in hopes of up-selling, also the free for the right income level tax preparations, but the gist of his article is on a third type of free tax preparations offer. In this case he examples Credit Karma.

A third kind of free tax prep, offered by Credit Karma, is blazing a new path: paying with your privacy. Available since 2017, Credit Karma Tax is an extension of the credit score website that’s already used by 85 million people. The tax service is really free — even if you use complicated IRS forms. It makes money by showing you tailored “offers” for credit cards and loans based on a profile of your financial life, which includes your tax returns unless you adjust a setting to opt out.

Deeper in the article he says:

It uses perhaps the most intimate personal data outside of health records …  While credit bureaus and data brokers already collect information about your finances, some details are hard for that industry to come by, such as your cash flow, mortgage deduction and savings yield.

I don’t pay for my tax preparations, it is free … sorta. My sister is a CPA, but I get yelled at a lot during the process, like “what were you thinking?” Any paid service would just shrug, bite their collective lip and trudge ahead. Now that I think about it, I do pay. Oil changes, fixing stuff around her house, taking her kids to ball games (okay, I admit I enjoy doing that) and other things a big brother should do just because.

Even though the article is almost exactly a year old, the ideas presented are true today. Sometimes free means you pay a big price.

    • in reply to: White Work Trucks #2178143

I had a little walk through the web and wouldn’t you know it, this isn’t the only forum Mr Jim’s question had been asked. Color by popularity, as in the number of work vehicles a color were produced, to engine type etc were there, but color is the topic.

First search I typed : Why are work trucks white.

      https://www.polymersolutions.com/blog/why-are-work-trucks-white/

Explains why white paint is cheaper. (Paint composition)

Then: Why are fleet vehicles white.

      https://www.automotive-fleet.com/148060/choose-any-vehicle-color-but-itll-probably-be-white-silver-or-black

      Most common:
White for USA and South Africa
      Silver for South America
      Black fleet (huh?) Europe.

“A few key reasons why white is preferred for fleet vehicles: Color base: White is the primary color because it is inexpensive, usually done in a single-layer (as opposed to multi-layers found in pearlized tones and complex darker shades). It provides the widest possible use for fleets to customize.”(Jul 28, 2011 Google search result)

Red is the most noticeable. Probably because it is ingrained in our memory, it’s the stop, look and listen color.
Red traffic signals, red stop signs and until recently red fire trucks. On a side note, bulls seem to notice red better also.

I’m still not used to the lime green fire trucks we see in Florida. Yuck. The color white is most noticeable in poor light conditions, unless it’s snow that’s the cause. At night a black vehicle isn’t as visible, common sense me thinks.

Lettering stands out better on a white background. Company name, phone#.

The thing every site I looked at said in chorus was; white is cheaper. One site even mimicked and old saying: You don’t buy a black car in Florida, this holds true in many places. White is cooler, reflects the light.

If a company has many vehicles and rotates a few out each year, white is the color to choose, standardization. It’s difficult to tell from across the street if it’s this years white or 2 years old white. Last but not least, white has a better resale value. (so I read)

Another side note not related to work trucks. I have restored older cars and the best color to paint them is white … it doesn’t show imperfections as much as colors do. (I never said show quality restoration)

Hmmm … I wonder why all the spacecraft rockets are white.
      (no, I didn’t paint them)

You can nit-pick everything I just wrote, I paraphrased most of it, except the quoted part.

Thanks Mr Jim for the question, I was tired of the crossword puzzle anyway.

Am I still in the Fun forum?

      😀

Most Fleet trucks (and cars) usually are white, it’s the stock color and cheaper. Drive by a truck dealer and look for a service truck or van that isn’t white, good luck. All my service vehicles were white. Had to wash them a lot.

You could spend thousands of dollars applying a graphic wrap around, to re-painting, which isn’t exactly cheap for multi vehicle companies.

You can have it any color you want, as long as it’s white. 😀

    • in reply to: RunKeeper App + Google could cost you $2,000 US #2177946

jabeattyauditor, thank you for correcting the misstatement I made. I have altered the topic heading to reflect as much. 🙂

My original reason for posting this was twofold.

First, it was a human interest story, albeit a sad statement for the un-savvy innocent. Secondly, it had a tech vibe built in, Google data collection. Most, if not everyone that reads AskWoody knows about privacy and Google, that they do not go hand in hand and most likely shouldn’t be used in the same sentence unless “lack of privacy” prefaces the word Google. That statement requires no justification here.

Runkeeper works on a lot of Apps, not just Android, and he paid the price for not reading the fine print. Not that riding your bicycle would ever come to mind prior to this incident. But now he knows, and what a costly way to find out that Google isn’t your friend.

      Close the barn door please.

ASICS the Japanese manufacture of Runkeeper, who’s name is an acronym for the Latin phrase Anima Sana In Corpore Sano (sound mind and sound body),  I find  difficult to fault for this. Perhaps I should say “stuff happens” and leave it at that, eh … not likely.

      I’ll keep tilting at windmills.

    • in reply to: RunKeeper App + Google could cost you $2,000 US #2177852

indirectly involving Google in the mix.

Indirectly? Seems pretty direct to me, but I’m only a casual observer.

He used pseudonyms on his social media accounts and the email account that Google used to notify him about the police investigation.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to include an embedded link in the forum signature field

      You can’t.

Notice the small print that says: You can use BBcodes, HTML will be stripped.

To create a link you must have an anchor 1st, “<a>” that is HTML.

When I start up my computer and it cycles to the User Screen, the picture is blurry almost unrecognizable.

Post which version of Windows you are using. Typing  winver in desktop search box will tell you. Either take a screenshot and post that (attach), or copy and post the info.  🙂

    • in reply to: Hard drive light has been flashing all day #2170852

I not sure why my hard drive light has been flashing all day.

Press Ctl+Alt+Del and open Task Manager

The first tab (Processes) will show what is being run .  The second tab (Performance) will allow you to view % of Hard Drive in use.  Between those two tabs you should get a good idea of what is happening.

Post back and tell us what is going on that might seem unusual.

I’ve tried every way I know how to tell it to NOT connect to wifi, and nothing works.

Have you tried putting it in Airplane Mode?

That is, until you figure out what the real problem is.
