    • I just now manually started (not restarted) the WinDefend service from Task Manager/Services, updated the definition files from “Virus & threat protection updates” inside Windows Security, and ran a Full Scan. Zero threats detected.

The update went to v1.313.1687.0, timestamped 11:04AM, and the About section reads:

      Antimalware Client Version: 4.18.2003.8
      Engine Version: 1.1.16900.4
      Antivirus Version: 1.313.1687.0
      Antispyware Version: 1.313.1687.0

    • My apologies for self-replying, but the edit timer ran out. My WinDefend service is stopped, will not restart, and the About info is as follows:

      Antimalware Client Version: 4.18.2003.8
      Engine Version: 0.0.0.0
      Antivirus definition: 0.0.0.0
      Antispyware definition: 0.0.0.0

I have MBAM Premium v4.1.0.56 as supplemental security to Defender. It is not “registered” with Win10.

    • Mine crashed about 1:30? AM CDT; I had manually updated to v1.313.1663? about 30 minutes prior. I’ve rebooted several times, no joy, haven’t tried the v1.313.1666 update yet.
Here’s a screengrab from just now. Hmm. Won’t let me attach the .jpg.

    • Dang. That’s discouraging. SETI seems a noble and reasonable cause to me.

    • in reply to: New AV Definition Updates: How often is enough? #2176236

When I was using Kaspersky, it checked every couple of hours. MBAM Premium checks every hour.

Windows Defender in my new Win10 box has gone as long as a day or more between updates, which is rather disturbing. I could drop some screengrabs in here, but why waste bandwidth?

This is part of the reason I’m moving to BitDefender AV Plus 2020 here in about 2 months when my MBAM Prem subscription dies. I’ll then transition to MBAM Free as an on-demand scanner.

The other part of the reason I’m moving away from Windows Defender / “Security Intelligence” is that I don’t really trust Microsoft anymore; why would I trust them with my real-time AV security? I realize the Win10 Defender is a whole other animal than the “Defender” of the Win7 era, but still…

    • SETI @ Home did the same thing to one of my old nVidia GPUs about 10 years back (at that time, SETI @ Home essentially was a screen saver that utilized CPU & GPU cycles; I have no idea how it’s set up now). So, since then, no mas Distributed Computing for this guy.

If there is a definition file or new version of Defender, it will be listed in your WU upgrade stack.

    • nVidia’s drivers are definitely available for download from their company website. Pick your card model, OS, etc., and they are right there.

    • I’m going to play Captain Obvious here, but this is, I think, new and possibly important/relevant information here for those of us that use the Pause Updates function: perhaps a way to “reset” or extend the Pause period.

I’m on Win10 Pro v1903 build 18362.592 updated January 25, my Pause period is maxed and is set to resume on February 29; this has made me strongly consider ignoring this month’s Defcon rating and installing the 2020-02 (February) patches.

I’m definitely not a seeker but I do like staying reasonably current on Windows patches and don’t like skipping months. I have a system image and rescue media at the ready. Well, they’re hidden in a drawer in an anti-static bag, not near my PC.

    • Win 10 1903 Pro (OS build 18362.592).
      Paused until 02-22-2020.
I do not see the update offered.

Edited to add: Nor have I seen it being offered since I updated to the January patches (KBs 4528760, 4532938, and 890830) on 01-25-2020.

    • I’m running Win10 Pro v1903, build 18362.535 and my Chrome default browser (which updated early this morning to v79.0.3945.130) shows as “Not Vulnerable.” I had not previously run the test.
This result was generated about 5 minutes ago. I did not have to clear the browser cache.
I’m using MBAM 4.04 Premium and Windows Security/Defender.

Windows 10 v1903 PRO Retail x64 Desktop PC

My “Pause” period was set to expire tomorrow: January 11, 2020. As this box (and the concomitant brand-new to me Windows 10 installed on it) are only a couple months old, and we have storms coming our way here in North Texas, I went ahead, took the plunge, and un-Paused my WU.

I was surprised by the results. Three updates were found and seamlessly installed in less than 15 minutes, in this order:
      KB 4530684 (2019-12 CU for Win10 x64, v1903)
      KB 4533002 (2019-12 CU for .NET for 3.5 & 4.8 for Win10 x64, v1903)
      KB 890830 (MSRT x64 – December 2019)

I am still on v1903, my Build number just changed from 18362.476 to .535, I still have the Optional “Feature Update to Windows 10, v1909 clickable link), I got (it looks like and I hope) my 5 Pauses back, and as far as I can tell, nothing else has changed. My Classic Shell stayed the same.
I take that back. The login splash screen picture changed.

I’m happy, at least for now, and maybe only until I am required to install v1909.
      Just my $0.02. YMMV.

I have the Pro version. I’m very much not trying to be snarky or smart-alecky or anything, but is my signature line not working?

Thank you so much, @PKCano, and everyone else here who tirelessly work to keep the rest of us on an even keel!

Please pardon my ignorance, but I’m a newbie at Win10 update avoidance, and my Pause period expires on January 11, 2020.
      I’m currently on v1903 (18362.476)
      Classic Shell v4.3.1
      Wushowhide downloaded 12-07-19

I’ve seen some of the links (and probably bookmarked some of the pages here on AW, but I could use a (no pun intended) crash course on holding off on updating and what to do when the all-clear bell is rung.

Thanks much for any advice/help/AW thread links! 🙂
