July 11, 2019 at 1:38 am in reply to: Microsoft surreptitiously adds telemetry functionality to July 2019 Win7 Security-only patch #1873862

Even #1 MicroShill Ed Bott can’t get a straight answer (or any answer) from Microsoft as to the inclusion of KB2952664 functionality to the July security-only update:

      https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-stirs-suspicions-by-adding-telemetry-files-to-security-only-update/

And while he offers his own theory about this inclusion (“I suspect that some part of the Appraiser component on Windows 7 SP1 has a security issue of its own. If that’s the case, then the updates indisputably belong in a Security-only update”), he also notes “there are still issues like this one where the company’s stubborn silence is baffling. It just serves as evidence for critics that the company has an ulterior motive. Would it really be that difficult to publicly state that the additional files were included because of an unspecified security issue?”

Unless, of course, it’s not true Mr. Bott. But then, why should we trust anything Microsoft says at this point anyway?

December 6, 2018 at 8:04 pm in reply to: Edge isn’t dead, it’s just morphing #238884

Actually, most Windows 10 users are not using Edge at all, and that’s the primary reason why it’s been such a competitive failure.

In fact, Ed Bott (Mr. MicroShill himself) posted this straight-forward look at Edge’s failure earlier today:

December 6, 2018 at 1:56 pm in reply to: More amazing prices on Office 365: Home 6 users/one year for $55; Personal 1 user/1 year for $ #238808

That’s a good price, I guess, unless you’re like me and (1) live in Canada, and (2) have no need for an office suite anymore (one of the perks of being retired for 15 years!)

But please keep the deals coming Woody, I’m sure you have a lot of readers who can take advantage of them! Maybe next time will be the charm for me, too.

I’m personally not a fan or user of Edge, but there’s some interesting stuff going on here.

According to Mehedi Hassan at Thurrott.com, this will enable the company to release Edge for Windows 7, 8.1 and MacOS as well:

      https://www.thurrott.com/google/194556/microsoft-confirms-it-will-adopt-chromium-for-microsoft-edge

Brad Sams says the same thing at Thurrott sister-site petri.com:

      https://www.petri.com/browser-reboot-microsofts-building-a-new-edge-for-windows-7810-and-macos

Might there be a Linux version somewhere in Edge’s future too? After all, several Chromium-based browsers already work on Linux and Windows.

Just checked the Windows 7 download link myself and was also offered the Korean language version only. Fortunately, the HeiDoc download tool is still offering the Windows 7 ISO in multiple languages including English, with no product key required.

Nice to have access to these again, though the cynic in me wonders just how much telemetry and other tracking c*** they’ve loaded into these images that wasn’t there in the original ISOs. Also makes me wonder if they’re considering extending either or both versions past their expected EOL dates. Hmmm…

      Thunderbird is an excellent choice.

Moving Thunderbird mail from one computer to another is a little fiddly but not that difficult:

December 1, 2018 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Netmarketshare says Win7 and Win10 usage running neck-and-neck #237589

Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015. So it’s taken nearly 3 1/2 years to hit just 70 % of the target they claimed they’d hit in two years, 3 at most. And let’s not forget it was a totally free update (still can’t call it an upgrade) for a full year. Even if you believe Microsoft’s numbers, this is at least slightly shabby.

… assuming that users actually see switching to Windows 10 as an upgrade… Clearly, hundreds of millions have not reached that conclusion yet.

They missed “truth”, “accuracy” and “honesty” to name at least three… but then those aren’t terms with which the current Microsoft regime seem to be familiar.

I’ll take your word for it. Doesn’t change the fact that they broke their own rules to con users into installing W10.

There’s absolutely no doubt Microsoft broke their own rules for the meaning of the red x. I refer you to an earlier comment I posted months ago on this same topic in a different thread:

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/hassan-windows-10-wont-waste-your-time-with-unexpected-updates-anymore/#post-207017

Changing the behaviour of the red x to mean “Yes, please, go ahead and infest my system with Windows 10” was pure deception (desperation?) by Microsoft.

Users who clicked it did absolutely nothing wrong – in fact, they did what years of using Windows had taught them to do, with expectation of the same result.

Whether Microsoft offered/buried options in mice type somewhere else in the dialogue box doesn’t make it right.
