AskWoody LoungerOctober 18, 2018 at 6:51 pm in reply to: Browsing safely the Web from Linux on a VM after Windows 7 EOL #225571Curious, if you are dual booting windows 7 and Linux, why would you need to disable the NIC in Windows? Is it to avoid accidental internet connection when logging into Windows from Linux? I only use a wired connection and pull it when computer is sleeping.

AskWoody LoungerI’m all patched up on my Win 7 64 bit through August. Since then, I’ve installed Linux Mint 19 with a dual boot on my old 2010 Toshiba Satellite Laptop (4 GB Ram). Consequently, I’m moving to Group W from Group B. I’ll continue using Win 7 for offline stuff and Mint for online. Perhaps I’ll reconsider and resume updating Win 7 if the need arises but for now, Linux is my go to for online activity.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 9, 2018 at 2:34 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Get patches, but don’t touch the Meltdown/Spectre trash heap #216398All caught up with Win 7 64 bit Group B. Installed the July KB4345449 SO, then the August’s KB4343899 SO and KB4343205 IE Cumulative and finally installed the Net Cumulative Security Update. All’s well thus far.
Thanks to all here that help light the path to patching.Group L (Linux Mint 19)

AskWoody LoungerThanks Microfix and PKCano. So I will be cautious and not install anything pending next months patches and (hopefully) a Defcon 3. This is really becoming a difficult process, more and more so each month. Especially for those of us in Group B since our SO’s aren’t cumulative.

AskWoody LoungerSo, I will install the latter of the security only July patches and wait for Defcon 3 to install the next IE patch. I will skip the July IE patch. I appreciate your fdbk PKCano.

AskWoody LoungerJune 3, 2018 at 7:22 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Time to patch, but be aware of Network-busting bugs in Win7 #195834Thanks to all for continuing to guide us. I’ve installed the security only (catalog), IE 11 cumulative (catalog) and the Net cumlative (from WU) for May. Have an Atheros LAN and wireless NIC. No problems to report thus far. All’s well. Peace for about a month.

AskWoody LoungerCurious PKCano,
When I downloaded 4099950, I also had to download the exe file that was included with it. Otherwise, the only file downloaded was 4099950, no exe. And, from what I’m interpreting, you only need to double click 4099950 to install both?? Thanks.Group L (Linux Mint 19)

AskWoody LoungerThank you DrBonzo;
OK, so as I mentioned above, I haven’t installed 4099950 and I don’t have any networking issues. I’ve checked my pci.sys file and it’s 6.1.7601.24056 dated 4/8/18. I’m assuming the pci.sys file is new enough given the other numbers mentioned in this thread. So, given this, can I simply skip 4099950 and continue onward with security only, IE, and Office April updates?I just hope down the line, I don’t have to rely on WU alone for security patches and this potentially botches it up.
Since 10/2016, I’ve utilized only the AKB2000003 security and IE 11 identified updates.
Thanks everyone for all your expertise. These are difficult days for Win 7.

AskWoody LoungerDrBonzo, your reply was helpful for me because I haven’t installed 4099950 at all. I have installed security only + IE + Office updates through March in addition to 4100480 to mitigate Total Meltdown. I haven’t experienced any networking issues. So, do I need to install 4099950 at all? I’d prefer to avoid uninstalling 4088878 to install the latest/greatest 4099950 if I can. Thanks for all responses.
Edit: I just went to retrieve the latest 4099950 from the Catalog in order to have it for safe keeping (just in case) and I saw the following exe file pciclearstalecache_1c944f48bfb21d88a2054683abcd02327ecf6b37.exe
This was included with 4099950. Is it supposed to be run as well????

AskWoody LoungerThis tends to be very confusing. Based on MrBrian’s initial post, if I hadn’t installed 4099950 before 4088878 and my network wasn’t a problem (because I didn’t have static IPs nor changed any default settings) then do I even need to install 4099950 at this time? And, if I don’t, will there be any issues if I decided to utilize static IPs or change network settings in the future?
I had planned to install 4099950 before Group B patches for April but I’m not so sure anymore based on this thread.

AskWoody LoungerI installed 4088878 after the 4/4 update. So, do I have 4099950 on board even though powershell search says I don’t? Would I have to install 4099950 by itsel to have powershell search see it as being installed?

AskWoody LoungerI installed 4088878 last month then using a power shell command searched for 4099950. It hadn’t been bundled with 4088878. So unless a change has occurred with 4088878 my guess it still needs installed by itself. I haven’t had any networking issues without installing 4099950. So should I install the updated version of 4099950 now before I install Group B April updates?
