    • in reply to: Creating a keyboard command? #1876844

A couple of other options, Ron:

      1. A programmable keyboard. There are many out there, I’m very happy with the ROCCAT Isku I got 3 years ago for $70โ€”it’s under $50 now.

      2. Instead of the excellent AutoIt or AutoHotKey, I use TypeItIn which is a simple visual app with a lot of power behind the GUI. A major advantage for me is I don’t have to remember any shortcuts, I find that onerous once it gets in the 50+ range. You can still set a KB shortcut key for any command if you wish.

Simmo, I don’t understand the code, but is it possible Word was your email editor in Win7, but isn’t in Win10? That’s the thought the error sparks for me.

    • the fact that its reversal was prompted only by an external rather than an internal backlash guarantees more such policies over time.

Or it could guarantee more careful consideration of such changes in future.

    • in reply to: Are discount versions of Office OK? #1873900

IIRC, for Office 365 subscriptions each user can install on multiple devices (i.e. PCs, MACs, phones) and still only count as one use

      That’s correct.

MS is very vagueโ€”or hides the info very wellโ€”re exactly how many and what kind of devices are meant by the frequently used word “multiple”.

While Wiki currently says 6 devices per user, my understanding is 3โ€”1 desktop, 1 tablet, 1 phone.

I suspect MS are taking a light approach with this, ie they’re not going to hound paying customers about this. But I haven’t tested being one user on 4 or 10 devices.

    • If I can get rid of it, then what is the most efficient and reliable way of doing so?

      Uninstall the various apps.

It may not be necessary, but I’ve always uninstalled old Office versions before installing new ones. No reason to encourage potential conflicts without good reason.

corporationsโ€™ technology-buying decisions are made by geeks embedded somewhere in those organizations

I doubt that’s widespread these days. So many large companies got severely burned in the 80s & 90s by leaving tech decisions to IT, it didn’t take long to realize that information and communication were far too important to leave under IT control.

Any company which regards tech as an end in itselfโ€”ie to be controlled by the tech people working itโ€”won’t last long in today’s competitive environment.

Thereโ€™s no good reason to use POP3 anymore

That’s not true, the reasons have been well documented here by me and others, so I’m not going to repeat themโ€”don’t have time anyway.

POP3 is simple to use with multiple devices too. Set one as your HQ, and configure deletion from the server either on download, or when you delete the email locally. All other devices, configure to leave the email on the server.

With regard to the general topic, by far the surest way is to get your own domain, as others have said above.

Fyi there are temp email services which some may find useful. Eg 10 Minute Mail will give you an address which will go dead after 10 minsโ€”useful for some sign-up & confirmation routines.

    • in reply to: Youtube downloaders quit working #1870601

I installed 4K Video Downloader, then downloaded a Youtube video. It saved it as a 0 byte text file.

After trying various other software, I’ve used 4K for quite a while. It worked so well I bought the pro version, as sometimes I download a lot of videos simultaneously.

This week I’ve used both single links and a text file of links, both working fine like always.

Iโ€™d recommend water cooling a rig like this

I haven’t done any comparison research, but fyi Noctua fans look interesting at the higher cooling end.

    • in reply to: Access 2010 with Office 2019 #1843448

I’ve seen people having 2 Office suites installed on a PCโ€”eg Office 2007 & Office 2016โ€”so my guess is what you’re planning should work. But I don’t know, I’ve never mixed versions.

      Is there a better option?

      Office 365.

If it’s only you, the Personal version is $70/year, v $250 for 2019 standalone. That’s nearly 4 years before 365 is dearer, but you get Access included [and Publisher], plus 1TB storage on OneDrive, web apps, and 60 Skype minutes/month.

Best value is if there are more than you. The Home version @ $100/year has the same software but allows 6 users with up to 3 devices eachโ€”Desktop/Laptop, Tablet, Phone.

It looks like Visio is subscription only now, so installing your 2010 version would be the way to go, whichever flavor of Office you pick.

      Iโ€™m getting a โ€œ502 Bad Gatewayโ€

I got that yesterday. I have a shortcut to ‘New Posts since last visit’ in my Opera favorites bar, which is how I access here. I stay always logged-in, altho I was logged out when I came here today.

Site is pretty quick atm, only slow bit I notice is after clicking Submit in a reply.

PK, with Home now getting the delay updates ability, why are you still adamant about Pro?

โ€œโ€ฆview it in a web browserโ€. That did display the email with graphics โ€“ but it used Internet Explorer 11

I just tried that, and it opened the email in my default browser Opera.
ETA: I have IE 11 installed, and use it occasionally.

Can I configure Outlook to use something other than IE11?

I had a look thru the settings and didn’t see anything about browser selection.

    • for many a Chrome OS is probably all they need now

For communication & media consumption, Chrome should do the trick. But there are a lot of people who need more. Eg 13yo relative got Chromebook for Christmas, but can’t do her school work on it.

We’re 3-5 years away from mobiles & Chromes & Arms being able to do what PCs do today. So it’ll come soon enough, by which time it’ll all have mostly moved to the cloud anywayโ€”where the OS will be largely irrelevant & invisible.

What Super-PR-Dude is talking about is what becomes possible once the digital world is cloud-centric. It will be very different once the OS is in the cloud, not on your device. Then it’s not billions of configs pulling from the cloud, it’ll be tens of OSs pushing to their subscriber base.

This can easily deliver the experience he talked about, once the supporting techs’ teething troubles are sorted out.

      seamless updates
      secure by default
Always connected when LTE 5G is available
      sustained performance
compute power of the cloud: this will be a big step forward for consumers, in the way AWS, Azure etc have been a big step forward for companiesโ€”scalable apps & computing power
      powered by AI
      multi-sense

We’re in transition now and thru the 20s, so it’ll mean big big changes in our near futures.
