Long ago, I used Acronis True Image from Windows for Worksgroups 3.11 to all the way, I think, to Windows 95, 98, 98SE.  When backing up my two laptops, I had to purchase an external USB cooling assembly to lessen the temperature during backups and the occasional restore.  In all fairness, I continue using the cooling assemblies forever on both laptops.  I even have a 5″ AC-powered fan aimed at the left back corner of each laptop, also running forever.  By forever, I mean, when laptop is on, so are its designated fans.

I too have been using TeraBytes’s Image for Windows, along with Macrium Reflect, for some time now.  Only failures within internal HDDs or external HDDs caused backup or restore failure.  The software themselves have been no problem.

One has to realize the extremely different sizes of businesses and their computer systems, ranging from a few desktops and/or laptops all the way to thousands of desktops and laptops spread across numerous counties, states, countries, and, across numerous time zones.  While you very wisely backup your computer onto an external USB HDD, many corporations have multiple networks, multiple servers, multiple OSs, and so on; while many do have various forms of backup, restore, recovery, disaster recovery processes, they certainly cannot simply daily backup one computer to one external USB HDD — nor even do as I do:  backup my two laptops’s boot & OS partition onto their respective two external USB HDDs and their data partitions onto their respective single external USB HDD, normally once or twice a month on the average.

A little off-topic, but it would be good practice to NAME your C: drive (e.g., System) to avoid drive confusion in the future.

      Zig

Actually for the purposes of backups and restores via external USB or DVD boots, having named normal partitions is a good idea, as drive letters are often “shuffled”.

For example, I have S02[174]C and S02[174]D for my C partition and D partition respectively.  During restores especially, if I’m somewhat stressed and/or in a slight hurry,  I know exactly which partition is being acted upon or going to be acted upon.

Of course, the only tie-in to this topic is:  if/whenever accidental un-intended major deletes happen, one can do a restore, if current backups on external media exist.

RetiredGeek, not to worry; I should have asked:  what PowerShell version does Windows 7 Professional have?

bbearren, I need help to get Image for Windows into my Windows 7 boot menu.

There were so many choices to make on that one page you referenced.

Do you have a quick-guide that I can use?

I think “copy host driver” means MR7 WIM WinXXRE or PE will use whatever drivers can be found on the computer rather than using compatible drivers from The ‘Net.

RetiredGeek, there is no DOS-box batch-file version of your very good MR script, correct?

    • in reply to: Driver Update Tool #2170556

For the first time ever using a pay-for driver updater, on both laptops, after making full images onto external media, I used Auslogics Driver Updater.  It actually did its job.  One laptop was rolled back from W8 to W7 by me, so Acer driver site only had W8 stuff.  Thankfully, ADU gave me no W7 trouble after updatings and restarts.  Maybe ADU will for your computer, don’t know.  It has drivers backup before updating.  ADU at the time had a one-time license fee, don’t believe they went to subscription since then.

Morris01, did you get that backup software working, or, did you switch to IFW?

“…Image For Windows also has a script for adding it into the Windows Recovery Environment, which is also quite handy…”

I never figured where that scrip is, how do I add IfW into the Windows environment?

I’ve used that over the years, actually I only tested destkp restore’s restore once, for windows 98SE.

I learned the hard not to defrag a hybrid drive.

Another source, i cannot remember where, mentioned restoring a partition’s full image (made via intellugent copy, not sector-by-sector) will leave files in contiguious condition.
