Seems to have stopped the messages.  Am I now much more susceptible to ransomware?

My original input was caused by:

      (1)  annoyance at the constant “error” messages, and

      (2) my inability to get an update “Freemake” to convert files that it converted easily a couple of years ago.

Do you know if there could have been an interaction here?  [Trying Freemake with the same files still does not work, after removing the action on the controlled folder access.]

      to anonymous:

My main virus protection is from MalwareBytes (Paid version).  I may have Windows Defender running also.

I may have – perhaps in response to a recent Windows Secrets article.  Should I undue these somehow?

I see that my topic came up on a Dell Forum.  See:

Thanks.  I set this – now I’ll see what happens!

    • in reply to: Office 365 #2394749

For a long time I could send e-mails from Snip & Sketch with snipped material.  It uses Outlook, but NOT the Outlook.com that I use regularly with the Office (or now Microsoft) 365 suite.  I use the Share utility as you suggest (and have been), but the e-mails I send from there no longer get to their destination – I don’t know where they go.

    • BTW:  The three pcs are about 1, 5, and 10 years old (desktop, laptop and all-in-one, respectively).  First (newest) is SSM Dell; other two are hp.

    • I ran all of the available updates on all of the three pcs and they all worked nearly fully well, so MANY THANKS!

So far the one area where “things” are still strange is in opening Excel files.  They open with a small icon is the upper-felt screen corner.  This is the smaller window option, and the other is full screen.  They do not show up (as they always did before, except sometimes the past two weeks or so) in the system tray, where clicking on them produces as reasonably sized window display.

    • I “always” delay patches for a month, as suggested – but I erroneously missed doing that in March (for the first time) on my three pcs (two hp and one Dell) – all now “fully” updated Win 10 except for any patches after the initial installation.

      My symptoms:

      • minutes delay in printing to an hp networked printer.
      • long delays in accessing OneDrive files
      • other delays and errors in working through browsers.
      • need for more frequent reboots.

Should I back out this update and, if so, how?

Should I install subsequent patches and, if so, which ones?

      [No blue screens – yet]

p.s.  It took me 2 1/2 months to partly recover from the Office 10 update debacle 3+ years ago; I sure don’t want to do that again.

Update:  Edge now works properly on this pc, but Chrome still freezes – but still ONLY on the msn.com site when viewing the rotating news clips at the top of the page.

addendum:  When I go to “Manage accounts,” I receive this message:

           access denied
The user ID that you entered is not recognized. If this is a new account, it may take a few hours before you have access to services. Important: This page does not yet support signing in with a Microsoft account. If you have one already, try signing in again using an account assigned to you by your organization. If you don’t have one, please request a new work or school account from your admin, and then try again.

So I cannot manually update my password.

      Q1:  Yes

Q2:  I was.  It appears, though, that when I changed my Win 10 password, theOutlook THAT COMES WITH WIN10 may not have updated.

I’m still getting the mail and sending it from my Outlook.com account associated with Microsoft (Office) 365.  When I use Snip & Sketch, however, and try to send the snip via e-mail, it does NOT send any longer – it just backs up in the Outbox of the Outlook associated with Win10.  It worked fine until my password change.

When I try to use the Win10 Outlook e-mail directly in the browser, the Outlook inbox opens, with the last messages received those just before I changed my password.  After a few seconds, a message appears at the top:  “Your Outlook account settings are out-of-date.”  If I then follow the recommendation to click on “Fix account,” I receive a message saying that I’m all set – the account has been fixed – followed a few seconds later by the out-of-date message.  I can go around this loop endless times.

      Any advice?

      So…

After two weeks usage and installation of the October updates and spring major update:

      • performance is better
      • I still lose my printer network connection, but not as often
      • I have difficulty getting log-in access after a reboot on the two older of my three pcs
      • my Windows 360 Outlook and Word 360 freeze up and require rebooting every couple of days on the major desktop.  Every open Word file then needs to be updated (synced with the file in One-Drive).
      • The systems, which worked beautifully a few months ago, is now unpredictable.

Maybe that’s the best Microsoft can do.

    • in reply to: Rapid deterioration in Win 10 #2308814

Attached is an updated resource monitor after I was caught into doing the early-October updates (I usually wait a bit longer).  “Things” seem to work better, although I still lose my printer connection.

I do not understand why my ss drive would have errors like indicated.  Does anything else look strange to you?

I also had occasion today to try some on-line videos of church services (church website, you-tube, and facetime) and, for quite some time the latest video (ONLY) would not play – just a screen with one black and one white block would display, along with the vibrating circle to show attempted download capability.  Then it does work all of a sudden.  Crazy, eh.

    • in reply to: Rapid deterioration in Win 10 #2308513

I did a complete reboot (from a powered-down modem & router) and things seem somewhat better – still checking.

But I don’t understand the blue lines (see recent file attached) – or, for that matter, the small green lines (bips) in the memory plot.  My memory is only solid state (no hard disk) – 1 TB.
